Essentialism versus Essentialism
View through CrossRef
Abstract
A great deal seems to be at stake in the debate over whether conceivability is a guide to possibility. Depending on the connection that obtains between the two, one may be in a position to deploy certain arguments for robust and startling claims of nonidentity. Perhaps most prominently, such arguments have been advanced in the philosophy of mind in order to establish various dualist, anti-physicalist views. But such conceivability arguments abound elsewhere as well, in order to reach conclusions about the individuation of events and of material objects, and so on.
