Gerald Prince conducts a comparative study of Bernard Frank and Patrick Modiano, two contemporaries who shared a number of literary affinities, including having come to writing because of their Jewishness. Prince explores the effects of antisemitism on each writer, with special emphasis on the Nazi occupation of France. The choice of these two writers to explore questions around Jewishness sheds new light on the widely read and celebrated Modiano, whose relationship and rivalry with Frank is a relatively unknown facet of his career.
