Two underwater archaeological campaigns in 1980-81 excavated the wreck of the Slava Rossii, man of war of Catherine the Great. She had hit the south coast of Levant Island during the night of 3rd/4th november 1780. The divers brought to the surface uniforms, crockery, personal articles, coins and small metal icons. In North America the War of Independence then raged. French and English were in opposing camps, and Russia was an ally to England. Nevertheless, the French authorities made a Particularly favourable welcome to the survivors of the Slava Rossii. The King of Franсe thus affirmed his support to Empress Catherine II’s joining the League of Neutral Countries, i.e. the "Non-Aligned", to use the sea freely.
