Active calcium extrusion by Amoeba proteus
View through CrossRef
AbstractCytoplasmic calcium levels in the amoeba are maintained at very low levels. Previous studies have suggested that this is accomplished by a system of cytoplasmic storage sites. Evidence is presented here that Amoeba proteus capable of actively extruding calcium across the plasmalemma. Active calcium extrusion is then responsible in part for the maintenance of low cytoplasmic calcium activities and may be involved at least indirectly in such basic cellular process as locomotion and pinocytosis in the amoeba.
