Cardboard with 117 mosaic beads [1487 - 1603].

View through Europeana Collections
Cardboard with sewn-on sample beads numbers 1487 to 1603. The beads are dull and opaque. Beads 1558 through 1566 are bevel cut beads, i.e., with ends ground off at an angle. This grinding was done by hand, especially for stringing. This allows the beads to fit together more nicely.Manufacture Mosaic beads belong to the group of wound beads, called lamp made beads. These are made by hand. \Glass is wound around a piece of copper wire using pliers, after which the copper wire is pulled out. This creates the hole in the bead. The pattern in the bead is created by inlaid and melted mosaics. This is a very labour intensive process.
