TRANSLATION OF THE NOVEL “OLGA” BY BERNHARD SCHLINK INTO UKRAINIAN: MISTAKEN TRANSLATION DECISIONS
View through CrossRef
Background. The relevance of this research stems from the increasing demands for high-quality translation, particularly in literary works. The study aims to identify, classify, and analyze translation mistakes in the Ukrainian translation of Bernhard Schlink’s novel “Olga” by Ye. Daskal.
Methods. The research employs general scientific methods (descriptive analysis, synthesis, induction and deduction, classification, and systematization) as well as specialized methods (discourse analysis, descriptive-analytical approach, comparative analysis, and translation analysis).
Results. The study examines the most well-known concepts of translation quality assessment (formal equivalence, functional equivalence, consideration of text type in translation) and identifies the key criteria for evaluating literary translation quality. The causes of translation mistakes are analyzed, distinguishing between two relevant types: functional-semantic mistakes (errors in understanding the original content) and normative-usual mistakes (errors in conveying the original content in the target language).
Conclusions. The analysis demonstrates that functional-semantic mistakes predominate in the Ukrainian translation of Bernhard Schlink’s “Olga”, mainly due to the translator’s insufficient linguistic proficiency in the source language, leading to distortions, inaccuracies, and ambiguities. In contrast, normative-usual mistakes occur much less frequently.
