Lipid profile of gelded creole horses (Equus caballus) raised in Antabamba-Apurímac

View through CrossRef
Serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins and triacylglycerols were evaluated in castrated Creole horses (Equus caballus), raised in 3 communities of the district of Antabamba, grouped in 4 age ranges. Horses were subjected to restraint for blood collection by jugular venipuncture. Serum was obtained by sedimentation and frozen at -20° C. Serum levels were analysed using the completely randomised design and the difference of means by Duncan's test. Serum levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerols in castrated Criollo horses were similar (P > 0.05). There is a correlation (r = 0.35) between age and serum low density lipoprotein levels (P < 0.05). Between serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol and triglycerols there is a correlation of r = 0.30 and r = 0.26 respectively (P < 0.05), between total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol the correlation was r = 0.77 (P < 0.05). Between serum levels of high-density lipoproteins-total cholesterol and triglycerols there is a correlation of r = 0.38 (P < 0.05). The age of the castrated Criollo horses affected the serum levels of high-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol. Total cholesterol had a positive linear correlation with low-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol.
Title: Lipid profile of gelded creole horses (Equus caballus) raised in Antabamba-Apurímac
Description:
Serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins and triacylglycerols were evaluated in castrated Creole horses (Equus caballus), raised in 3 communities of the district of Antabamba, grouped in 4 age ranges.
Horses were subjected to restraint for blood collection by jugular venipuncture.
Serum was obtained by sedimentation and frozen at -20° C.
Serum levels were analysed using the completely randomised design and the difference of means by Duncan's test.
Serum levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerols in castrated Criollo horses were similar (P > 0.
05).
There is a correlation (r = 0.
35) between age and serum low density lipoprotein levels (P < 0.
05).
Between serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol and triglycerols there is a correlation of r = 0.
30 and r = 0.
26 respectively (P < 0.
05), between total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol the correlation was r = 0.
77 (P < 0.
05).
Between serum levels of high-density lipoproteins-total cholesterol and triglycerols there is a correlation of r = 0.
38 (P < 0.
05).
The age of the castrated Criollo horses affected the serum levels of high-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol.
Total cholesterol had a positive linear correlation with low-density lipoprotein-total cholesterol.
