Abstract The title dux (plural duces ) was synonymous with military command throughout much of the Roman period, though its usage changed considerably over time. Initially used generically during the republican period to refer to senior individuals bearing military commands, from the reign of Diocletian the duces were invariably powerful military commanders with responsibility for protecting large swathes of the imperial frontier.
