La sanctification du dimanche dans la correspondance entre Philipp Jacob Spener et Sebastian Schmidt (1669-1670)

The birth of the pietist reformation is usually associated with Jacob Spener’s publishing of his manifesto, the Pia Desideria. But other aspects of this thematic approach, more directly relating to the problems of civil society, are also developed in Spener’s correspondence and sermons. One will pay special attention in this paper to the controversial issue of the divine commandment concerning the observance of the Lord’s Day, with what it implies in terms of law, sin, human condition and worldly activity. The opposition between orthodoxy and heterodoxy is in this case less relevant than the emergence of two diverging views of the interrelation between protestantism and modernity.
