Edward Bradford Titchener: 4. Titchener Comes to Cornell

Abstract In September 1892 Edward B. Titchener arrived at Cornell University, where he was to spend his entire academic career. This fourth article in the American Journal of Psychology (AJP) series on Titchener describes the situation at Cornell that led to his appointment, the academic environment at Cornell, his initial impressions of the university, and the state of the laboratory that he inherited from his predecessor, Frank Angell. Titchener attended the first regular meeting of the American Psychological Association in December 1892; there he met many of his American colleagues and learned of the rivalries between them and their concerns over G. Stanley Hall's editorial policies for the AJP (founded 1887). It was a rapid beginning of a career that would see Titchener rise to prominence in a burgeoning profession in North America.
