The Wild Boar

View through National Gallery of Denmark
“The Metal Pig” is an affectionate nickname for an ancient bronze sculpture of a large, majestic boar used as a fountain figure in Florence. It is said to be lucky to touch its snout. Even the plaster cast’s snout has been rubbed to a shine. Hans Christian Andersen wrote a story about “The Metal Pig”: “It is quite a picture to see a half-naked boy clasping the well-formed creature by the head, as he presses his rosy lips against its jaws …” As part of the project “gipSMK” (2011-12), which enabled a selected group of users to select and borrow the works they wished to see as part of an exhibition, “The Metal Pig” was selected by a group of dance students from the Copenhagen Contemporary Dance School. To them, the sculpture possessed a divine strength and ferocity and a shape they could use to develop their dance. The film “gipSMK” about the project can be viewed at the Royal Cast Collection, at the National Gallery of Denmark’s website www.smk.dk, and on YouTube and Facebook.
