Abstract
Chapter 1 introduces Kathavachak’s hometown of Bareilly. It provides a brief history of the city proper and greater Bareilly, which in the book roughly coincides with the historical lands of Rohilkhand. It also gives a virtual walking tour and retrospective of Bareilly, focusing on places and events relevant to this book. The chapter includes details about Kathavachak’s days in Bareilly and lasting imprint on the city, as well as the author’s impressions of Bareilly as it looks today. It notes the shared cultural history of Hindus and Muslims in the city, home to both Kathavachak and Sufi leader and scholar Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi. It also discusses incidents of communal violence between Hindus and Muslims in Bareilly and their effect on Ramlila, alongside the meteoric rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the city and state.
