IMPACT OF SOCIAL INDISCIPLINE ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL SCIENCE STUDENTS IN BWARI AREA COUNCIL. F.C.T- ABUJA

The study investigated the impact of social indiscipline on academic achievement of senior secondary school science students in Bwari Area Council, F.C.T-Abuja. The study was guided by two Research questions and corresponding Research hypothesis, The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study was 20,842 students in all the thirteen (13) public senior secondary schools in Bwari Area Council, F.C.T-Abuja. Five schools that offers science subjects were selected through a simple random sampling technique from the population. The sample size was 379 SSII students who served as respondents. The researcher designed questionnaire titled, “Students’ Questionnaire on Indiscipline and academic achievement (SQIAA) which is used for data collection. The instruments were subjected to the judgment of experts for validation and it yielded 0.92 as logical validity index. The instrument was pilot tested on twenty (20) respondents and the coefficient of internal consistency of 0.82 was obtained. Descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation were employed to answer the research questions, while the hypotheses were tested using the independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The major findings of the study revealed that there is a significant impact of drug abuse on the academic achievement, there is a significant impact of bullying on academic achievement, t of senior science secondary students in Bwari Area Council, F.C.T-Abuja. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the school management should ensure that students caught in acts of indiscipline are subjected to rigorous counselling sessions and also ensure that students involved in acts of indiscipline are punished to serve as deterrent to others. The government and other stakeholders should ensure that they provide conducive atmosphere for learning in order to curb indiscipline in schools.
