Abstract
Oceanus was both a mythological character and a geographical reality, the Atlantic Ocean. As a mythological character, Oceanus was a Titan, the son of Ouranus and Gaia, described as a large river encircling the earth. Oceanus' offspring with Tethys were the Oceanides and all the rivers and springs of the earth, even those that flowed underground such as the Styx (Hes.
