Elizabeth Wilmot (N ée Malet), Countess of Rochester (c.1640---168 I)

View through CrossRef
Abstract The wife of the notorious John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester was ‘The great beauty and fortune of the North’, according to Pepys, worth £2,500 a year. She was the only child and heiress of John Malet of Enmore in Somerset, and granddaughter of Lord Hawley. In 1665, when he himself was 17, Rochester attempted to abduct her, and was punished by a brief confinement in the Tower. After a somewhat scandal-prone couple of years at court flirting with her many suitors, she decided to marry him after all, and did so in January 1666/7. Both she and Rochester were still minors. This was a cause for considerable celebration: her formidable mother-in-law, Lady Wilmot, was in hopes that the Somerset fortune could be diverted to cover her own enormous debts. There is no evidence that she succeeded in doing so.
