Gostha Leela as a devotional Dance form of Manipur
View through CrossRef
Gostha Leela is a traditional dance-drama of Manipur, deeply rooted in the region’s Vaishnavite devotional practices. Originating from the storytelling of Krishna’s childhood episodes, particularly the grazing of cows and vanquishing demons, Gostha Leela fuses dance, music, and theatre in its performance. Historically staged in temples and mandhavs, it not only served as a form of religious entertainment but also as a vehicle for imparting spiritual values and community participation. Its distinctive features include the Gostha-Bhangi-Achouba and Gostha-Vrindavan-Bangi dance forms, which are essential elements in the syllabus of Manipuri classical dance. Over time, Gostha Leela has played a pivotal role in shaping Manipuri culture and strengthening collective identity through shared devotion and artistic expression. However, modern influences and educational pressures have endangered its practice, making revitalization efforts crucial to its survival. Community engagement and child participation remain vital in preserving this living heritage.
