Peace ΙΙ

View through Europeana Collections
In 1985, Korovessi visited the Centre for Contemporary Electronic Music of Iannis Xenakis, an event that had a catalytic impact on the subsequent evolution of her artwork. She tried to explore the relationship between art and technology and sought to combine sculpture with the language of music through advanced techniques and the assistance of electronic computers. According to the artist, the word constitutes a structured auditory entity that encompasses meaning, expression, emotion, representations, culture, and she attempts to transform the waveform, the sound recording of the word, into sculpture, utilizing the materials and their composition in space. As she notes, "Because the structure of the waveform is based on specific lengths of vibrations, it transforms the material and, by extension, the artwork itself into a musical instrument with a specific harmonic sequence... The sculptural waveform 'Peace' signifies a composition of multiple people coexisting harmoniously but with a delicate balance. The artwork oscillates on its semicircular base, thus representing the sensitive and fragile balance of forces that bring about peace among people and in their relationship with nature and themselves".
