Vacherot and His Circle

Abstract
This chapter deals with some of the spiritualist heirs to Cousin, Vacherot, and Saisset, and the reactions they provoked among Catholic authors on the one hand, and those in thrall to the positive sciences, like Renan, on the other. Vacherot and Saisset argue, against both these groups, that reason is capable of ascending to metaphysical truths, and that philosophy is not thereby subordinated to either religion or the positive sciences. Although the discussion focuses on the relationship between God and the world, what is at stake is the capacity of philosophy to take on intellectual and political authority, even when that authority is democratic in Vacherot’s case.
