Chapter 5 explores the history of televised wrestling and the role bootlegging played expanding the geographic reach of broadcast content alongside new fan identity formations. As a result of TV executive taste cultures and the logics of wrestling promoters, televised wrestling was a distinctly local form of broadcasting from 1955 until 1976. This chapter considers the how the history of tape trading televised wrestling demonstrates audiences attempts to overcome the challenges of space and time, and gain access to regional, international, and classic wrestling matches. Moreover, the research in this chapter points to the ways bootlegging televised wrestling became integral to the development of a masculine intellectual wrestling fan subjectivity characterized by demonstrating mastery of detailed wrestling knowledge.
