Freemasonry, Sex Scandals, and Psychic Powers

Abstract This chapter examines the rise of Charles Webster Leadbeater in the Theosophical Society and the developments of Co-Masonry, the Mystica Aeterna, and the continuing evolution of the Ordo Templi Orientis. Annie Besant, now the head of the society, proved unable to separate herself from Leadbeater, despite credible accusations against him of pedophilia, causing all manner of trouble for the society. Leadbeater’s claim that Jiddu Krishnamurti was the second coming of Christ and the Maitreya Buddha transformed Theosophy. Besant brought a mixed-gender form of Freemasonry from France to England and merged it with the Theosophical Society. In Germany, Rudolf Steiner joined the Ordo Templi Orientis and pioneered a co-ed form of Freemasonry, the Mystica Aeterna. The chapter concludes with a scandal in Germany that sends Theodor Reuss fleeing to seek refuge in England.
