The Great Indian Hindustani Classical Vocalist of Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana: Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan

Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan was a renowned Indian classical vocalist and a leading exponent of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana. Born into a family with a rich musical heritage, he received rigorous training under his father, Ustad Fida Hussain Khan, and his uncle, Ustad Haider Khan. Known for his mastery of the khayal genre, his singing was characterized by intricate taans, bol-banaav, and layakari, coupled with deep emotional expressiveness. Throughout his illustrious career, Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan performed widely across India and internationally, earning acclaim for his profound musicality and adherence to classical traditions. He was a dedicated teacher, mentoring many students who went on to become notable musicians, including his son Ustad Rashid Khan. His contributions to Indian classical music were recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Tansen Samman. He was also associated with the ITC Sangeet Research Academy as a Guru.
