Waiting for Lee August 7–13, 1863

Gabe is ordered to come east of the Blue Ridge to support Lee, but again nothing happens. General Early tries to get Gabe assigned to his division. Jones tries manfully to get promotion for Gabe but still nothing happens, and his frustration only grows, testing his patriotism to the Southern cause. Gabe and Nannie are both disgusted with President Davis, and Gabe predicts that however the war ends, slavery will die out. And then they learn that Nannie was not pregnant after all. She was delighted. He was saddened.
