A magyarságkép minősége mindig fontos szerepet játszott az ország sorsának alakulásában. Ezer éves történelmünk során ez a kép két szélsőség közt váltakozott, az egyik szerint a magyarok barbárok, a másik szerint Magyarország a kereszténység védőpajzsa. A 19. század végén, a 20. század elején kialakuló negatív kép egyenes úton vezetett Trianonhoz. Az 1956-os forradalom, majd az 1989-1990-es rendszerváltozás ismét a pozitív képet teszi dominánssá. Az 1992-ben Párizsban aláírt Barátsági és Együttműködési Szerződés, az első a két nemzet történetében, azt az új helyzetet rögzíti, amely a francia kisantant-politika feladását és Magyarország felértékelését foglalja keretbe.
