Abstract
This chapter presents twenty-three reviews and essays written by Michael Steinberg and published in the Boston Globe between January 4 and December 19, 1970, opening with an article addressing the survival of “real music” in performance, composition, and as an industry beyond the 1970s. Concert reviews include, among others, appraisals of André Previn and Kiril Kondrashin conducting the London Symphony and Moscow Philharmonic, respectively; Leonard Bernstein conducting the premiere of Elliott Carter’s Concerto for Orchestra with the New York Philharmonic; Gunther Schuller leading his own Spectra with the BSO; early-career appearances by Jessye Norman and André Watts; the Composers String Quartet playing music of Elliott Carter; Michael Tilson Thomas leading the BSO in Mahler, Piston, Schumann, and Lou Harrison; Seiji Ozawa leading the BSO in Copland, Ligeti, and Berlioz; and William Steinberg conducting Mahler’s Seventh Symphony with the BSO. Other articles include reviews of David Cairns’s newly published translation of Berlioz’s Memoirs, Benjamin Britten’s recording of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s recording of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo; and features devoted to the nature of large amateur choruses, William Schwann’s record catalog, and a performance by the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Israel Festival.
