Effect of experimental intensification measures on physiological and biochemical parameters of pond fish

View through CrossRef
Purpose. A study of physiological and biochemical parameters of age-1+ common carp and age-2+ Chinese carps to obtain a general assessment of the physiological state of their body as a result of an experimental complex of intensification measures, which consisted in adding compost to the ponds and supplementing their diet with the premix “Super Carp Boost 2%”. Methodology. The study was conducted in the conditions of the Rudnyky farm ‒ department of PJSC Lviv Regional Production Fish Plant for 160 days. Fish were grown at a stocking density of 2240 ind./ha and polyculture of age-1 carp, age-2 bighead carp and age-2 grass carp in the ratio of 79.9:12.9:7.1%, respectively. Fish in the control group and experiment 1 were fed a feed mixture throughout the growing season. In experiment 2, a feed mixture containing the vitamin-mineral-amino acid premix “Super Carp Boost 2%” was fed. Compost was applied to the ponds of both experimental groups (experiment 1 and experiment 2) at the rate of 5 t/ha. In the studied fish, the following were determined: fat content, protein and dry matter in skeletal muscles; erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, haemoglobin concentration, and haematocrit; total protein and the ratio of individual protein fractions in blood serum; lipid peroxidation products and antioxidant enzymes in the liver and skeletal muscles. Findings. In experiment 2, as a result of the application of a set of intensification measures, an increase in the content of dry matter, protein, and fat in the muscles of common carp and grass carp was recorded. An increase in the erythrocyte count, haemoglobin content, and haematocrit in the blood of common carp and grass carp as well as a decrease in the leukocyte count in the blood of all species of farmed fish was found. Also, in experiment 2, an increase in α-globulins and a decrease in γ-globulin fractions in the blood serum of common carp, a decrease in β-globulin fractions in the blood serum of bighead and grass carps, and an increase in γ-globulin fractions in grass carp were recorded. In the liver and skeletal muscle tissues of age-1+ common carp and age-2+ grass carp of experiment 2, a decrease in the content of lipid peroxidation products and an increase in the activity of enzymes of the body’s antioxidant defence system were found. Originality. For the first time, a study was conducted on the effect of a complex of intensification measures, which consisted of adding compost to ponds and introducing the “Super Carp Boost 2%” premix into the diet, on the physiological and biochemical parameters of farmed fish. Practical Value. The use of an experimental complex of intensification measures contributes to improving the intensity of metabolic processes in the fish organism, which, when implemented in practice, provides for the optimization of the production of fish products. Description:
