Life of Aesop

View through CrossRef
The Life of Aesop, also known as the Aesop Romance, is a popular fictional biography of the legendary fabulist Aesop. Written in Greek by an unknown author, it probably dates to between the 1st century bce and the 1st or 2nd century ce. The author employs a nucleus of historical fact, which he expands with legendary material concerning Aesop that was in circulation at least as early as the Classical era. The simple language, the linear narrative, and the entertaining and didactic character of the Life ensured its wide popularity in east and west and its survival up to Late Antiquity and then through the Middle Ages to the present.
