Maria Lactans

View through Europeana Collections
The iconography of the Maria Lactans, depicting Mary breastfeeding the infant Jesus, was one of the most popular representations of Mary in Christian art. The sculptor Brioloto approached the theme with a characteristic detachment for his time: the figure of Mary sits rather stiffly on her throne, gazing sternly ahead. Nevertheless, the work also displays a tenderness inherent to the iconography, capturing an intimate moment between mother and child. The 'Maria Lactans' aims to highlight the humanity of Jesus and the humility of Mary.
