View through CrossRef
This chapter looks at George Craig’s early life in Galashiels, the significance of the burgh, and his family background. His relationship with the Leith Bank is discussed along with a survey of the major clients for whom he acted as local law agent. These include the laird of Gala; the laird of Torwoodlee; the geologist George Fairholme of Greenknowe and the anatomy professor, Dr Alexander Monro tertius. Craig’s relationship with Sir Walter Scott is also considered, as are his working relationships those working in his office, including his partner William Rutherford and his clerks. This chapter also discusses Craig’s correspondence in general and Craig’s political interests. As a Tory political agent, Craig had to understand electoral law and part of his work involved arranging for the qualification of new voters.
