A Blueprint for Ethics

View through CrossRef
Chapter 1 provides a blueprint for ethics, with Plato’s Philebus as its ancestor. Ethics, it is argued, starts out by asking “what is the good?” [Q]‌. The chapter offers a distinction between different versions of Q and corresponding lines of inquiry: about psychology and motivation, the nature of value, and the metaphysics of human life; ethics should include, it is argued, each of these approaches to the good. This proposal departs from orthodoxy in contemporary appropriations of ancient ethics by being significantly less—or less immediately—concerned with virtue. The chapter shows that Plato’s Philebus is as of yet under-explored for the purposes of contemporary engagement with ancient ethics. It is argued that this is a mistake, especially with a view to the dialogue’s deep interest in psychology and in metaphysical questions bearing on ethics.
