This chapter discusses Fiona MacCarthy's Life of Eric Gill, which revealed from Gill's diaries that he enjoyed incestuous relationships over a long period with two of his sisters and with his two eldest daughters. For a lay brother of the Order of St Dominic, who wore the girdle of chastity of the Confraternity of Angelic Warfare, this is obviously not a good record. Gill's treatment of women understandably riles MacCarthy. He did not think females worth educating, so his daughters never went to school. The chapter then considers Gill's theory that Christianity and sexual intercourse were essentially the same. It looks at his sculptures, including his masterpiece Mankind, as well as his wood engraving Nuptials of God. Where everyone agrees Gill was supreme was in the typefaces he designed for the Monotype Corporation.
