Reproductive health problems in Sri Lankan adolescents

View through CrossRef
This qualitative interview study explores twelve adolescent reproductive health (ARH) care providers’ perceptions of ARH problems in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Several minor ARH projects have been running in Colombo and the experience of the providers working in those projects may contribute to the improvement of ARH. Adolescents are challenged by conflicting paradigms regarding sexuality represented by traditional cultural norms recommending sexual abstinence and the modern values with acceptance of love affairs. A variety of ARH problems and reflections over different strategies to improve knowledge, awareness and services were revealed. The need for collaboration between the health, education, social, cultural and legal sectors to diminish ARH problems is clear. The active participation of adolescents in development of programmes and services is needed and the possibility of midwives to contribute to ARH promotion should be considered.
