Flagellation

View through CrossRef
Abstract Flagellation is the administration of pain by means of whips, rods, or other implements applied with violence to the back. One thinks immediately of the flagellation of Christ with the Roman flagellum, a short whip made of several leather thongs knotted with pieces of metal. It was nearly always used on prisoners before crucifixion, causing massive damage to the body and excruciating pain. In the case of Pilate it seems also that he was prepared to have Jesus chastised as a substitute for crucifixion, which the Jews did not accept as adequate punishment (Luke 23:13–24); whether this would have been a flagellation is unclear. The flagellation is graphically and accurately depicted in Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of the Christ .
