Off to Join General Lee July 20–28, 1863

View through CrossRef
Gabe joins Lee’s army at Winchester where he commands the army’s rear guard. Several generals express a desire for Wharton to join their army, including Jubal Early. Meanwhile General Jones wants Gabe back in Southwest Virginia, where another Federal cavalry raid looms. It strikes Dublin, not far from Central Depot, and Nannie and her family evacuate in the panic. Meanwhile, Gabe and Nannie both worry over honor as his deserved promotion continues not to come. Gabe’s optimism becomes more apparent, perhaps to counter Nannie’s growing fear and disillusionment. It is apparent that there is a darker side to her personality that Gabe will have to deal with.
