“Redrawing the Boundaries: Toward a New African Art Discourse” was the editorial to the first issue of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, no. 1 (Fall/Winter 1994): 3–7, founded by Okwui Enwezor, Chika Okeke-Agulu, and Salah M. Hassan. It attacks the lack of representation of contemporary African artists in New York galleries and the prevalence of primitivist attitudes in Western museums. It argues for a strong critical response to art by African artists based in Africa and in the African diaspora.
