Training of Medical Physicists Based on Medical Education

View through CrossRef
Purpose: To summarize the experience of professional retraining of medical physicists based on medical education and to analyze the resulting organizational and methodological features in the context of developing human resources capacity in medical radiology. Materials and methods: The study presents the structure of a professional retraining program in "Medical Physics" implemented at Ryazan State Medical University. The program comprises nine modules covering physical, technical, and clinical components. Special emphasis is placed on the final stage of the program – clinical internship at a radiotherapy department. A comparative-analytical and regulatorycontent analysis was conducted, supported by practical observations in cooperation with clinical institutions and a review of international training models. Results: The analysis confirms the feasibility of training medical physicists within a medical university framework, provided that technical disciplines are purposefully integrated and supported by mandatory clinical internships. Two educational trajectories for medical physicist training are identified: the traditional (technical) and the alternative (medical), each requiring interdisciplinary enhancement. A schematic model of professional routing is proposed, with key differences in competence profiles out lined. Conclusion: Medical education, supplemented by targeted professional retraining, can provide effective training for medical physicists capable of operating in clinical environments. A practice-oriented approach based on mentoring and interaction with experienced professionals is essential for the formation of professional identity. The experience presented may serve as a foundation for scaling this model within the system of higher medical education.
