Untitled

View through National Gallery of Denmark
Between 1965 and 1969 Gernes created several series numbering between 8 and 50 paintings executed on square hardboard sheets. The series unfold simple systems and sequences based on anonymous and impersonal motifs such as the alphabet, stripes, “targets”, or – as is the case here – dots using industrial, clear, spectral colours that were applied rather than painted on. The changes in colour were based on systems and chance. The idea was that the combinations of colours should not spring from the artist’s personal temperament and harmonisations. The individual paintings in the series can be combined and hung as you wish. Gernes wished to create a flexible, monumental, and down-to-earth work that can be adjusted to match a given setting’s dimensions and functions.
