“Catholic Action” in New Jersey: The Catholic Women’s College Club, 1934–1994
View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT: This is a case study of an obscure, unheralded, and formally unaffiliated Catholic women’s organization that existed in the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, for six decades: The Catholic Women’s College Club (CWCC). The group’s well documented archival footprint provides an opportunity to enhance our understanding of lay Catholic activism in the understudied decades prior to Vatican II. The CWCC shared commonalities with other Catholic women’s organizations active in the same period, such as the National Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Daughters of Isabella, as it sought to carry out a program of “Catholic Action” as members defined it. Remarkable for its longevity, impressive range of activities, and incredible commitment to its stated mission, the story of the CWCC challenges researchers to be mindful of the rich variety and diversity of women’s contributions to the life and work of the church. Such grassroots clubs made a difference in the lives of others through their service and charitable work, but also contributed to members’ own edification, personal development, enjoyment, and sense of self.
