Tuvstarr Still Sitting There and Staring Wonderingly into the Water

View through Europeana Collections
John Bauer is probably the most successful illustrator in Sweden of all times and known for his illustrations for the fairy tales collection "Among Gnomes and Trolls", annually published at Christmas since 1907. Although he based his watercolors on specific tales, they may as well be perceived as independent works of art. The motifs and the sceneries are personally sensitive interpretations of Nordic nature and its function in the folk tales. His best-known illustrations are for the fairy tale of princess Tuvstarr and Skutt the Moose. In the fairy tale princess Tuvstarr follows Skutt the Moose, who wants to show her the world. She loses her identity during the journey through the dark woods. The wood spirit takes her dress and the fairies her crown and she drops her golden heart into the forest lake, and still Tuvstarr is sitting there and stiring wonderingly into the water.
