Tsongkhapa

View through CrossRef
Tsongkhapa (1357–1419) is one of Tibet's most important philosophers. His understanding of Buddhist Madhyamaka (“Middle Way”) philosophy, particularly the “two truths,” brought together Candrakīrti's interpretation of emptiness ( śūnyatā ) with Dharmakīrti's epistemology. His creation of a systematic cohesion out of disparate elements of Buddhist epistemological and ontological thinking, ethical concerns, meditative praxis, and soteriology rank his project among the Buddhist world's great philosophical accomplishments. The Gelukpa ( dGe lugs pa ) order, founded by his students at his directive, systematized and expanded upon his thinking, creating a philosophical training system still flourishing today. The Gelukpa order gave rise to the Dalai Lamas, whose political rule over some 300 years gave Tsongkhapa a lasting sociopolitical prominence.
