Abstract LGBTQ individuals experience unique health disparities, and each of the LGBTQ populations has their own health concerns that may be further impacted by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and other factors. LGBTQ youth are at increased risk for depression and suicidal ideation. Among LGBTQ youth, rates of substance use may be higher than heterosexual youth; homelessness is a significant issue for LGBTQ youth. LGBTQ youth are targets of increased levels of violence, victimization, harassment, and stigmas. Many LGBTQ adolescents use social media as a primary means to interact with other LGBTQ adolescents; social media does provide a communication opportunity, but LGBTQ youth also face online harassment. While schools are a domain where homophobia may exist, there are also strategies that have been shown to promote the safety and well-being of LGBTQ youth in the school setting.
