Migration Dynamics in Mauritius

View through CrossRef
Abstract Mauritius is a land of no indigenous population, yet it is an island that has, and continues to witness multiple forms of inward and outward migration. These cycles of migration to a large extent coincide with the island’s development. Mauritius seems to offer a dynamic site for inwards and outwards movement of people. From colonial to contemporary Mauritius, the island’s development model was premised on the mobility of people. This chapter charts out the different forms of migration to and from the island starting with colonial Mauritius, early post-independence, the booming 1990s, and ultimately contemporary Mauritius, examining the link with the development and progress of the country. The chapter analyses the key migration patterns in Mauritius, discussing the implications for and contribution to the development of the country.
