AbstractPtolemy IX Soter II (r. 116–107 and 88–81/80bce) was the eldest son of Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra II or Cleopatra III. He first ruled with Cleopatra II and then with Cleopatra III until 107bce, who then appointed his brother Ptolemy Alexander I as co‐ruler. He then established himself in Cyprus and fought out a long struggle with his brother. He returned to Egypt in 88 after Alexander I had been driven from the throne and then ruled with his daughter Cleopatra V Berenike III.
