A Transcription and Performance Guide of the Sonata for Cello and Piano (1922) by Manuel María Ponce for Baritone Saxophone

View through CrossRef
Music for saxophone by Mexican composers is scarce with the first documented work being composed in 1974. As a result, repertoire by Mexican composers has been undervalued in pedagogy and performance. The purpose of this document is to diversify the saxophone repertoire by transcribing Manuel María Ponce's Sonata for Cello and Piano (1922) for Baritone Saxophone. Ponce was a pivotal figure in Mexico’s musical history as he helped establish the country’s nationalistic style by utilizing folk idioms in his music. Ponce’s sonata provides artistic and technical qualities that align with music that is considered to be standard in the saxophone’s core repertoire. This document underscores the lack of music written by Mexican composers, provides an analysis and performance guide to Ponce’s Sonata as transcribed for the baritone saxophone, and a brief biography of Manuel Ponce.
