Abstract
Xenophon is one of only three authors who actually knew Socrates, the founder of political philosophy, and whose works about him have survived. The other two are Plato and the comic poet Aristophanes. Since Socrates himself left no record of his life or thought, our understanding of the origins of political philosophy depends heavily on these authors. In Xenophon's case, there are four works that focus on Socrates: the
Memorabilia
, the
Oeconomicus
(or, “Household Manager”), the
Symposium
, and the
Apology of Socrates
.
