Sacramenta Epistularia: Letters as Sacraments

Abstract
This chapter demonstrates the ‘public’ nature of private letters, as revealed both through internal allusions and through content. The issue of audience bears also on Paulinus’ choice to write prose, not metrical, letters. He and other Christian writers of the period appear to be forging a new role for their letters: the letters – themselves, and as historical events – become a sign of spiritual dedication, and take on a sacramental function.
