Abstract
This book offers a comprehensive overview of Victorian architecture, focusing on the period from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century in Britain and the broader British world. It explores key themes such as urbanism, industry, government, faith, empire, modernity, social order, family, collecting, and consumerism, reflecting how Victorians experienced their world. A central aspect of the book is its global perspective, positioning British architecture within the context of Britain's colonial expansion. As people and ideas become increasingly mobile, the themes of speed and movement are highlighted, illustrating the far-reaching influence of British architects. Finally, the book demonstrates how British architects design buildings not only within the British Isles but across the empire, from Barbados to Bombay, Newfoundland to New South Wales.
