Reading Aeneas

View through CrossRef
This chapter examines Aeneas' personal desire, which is not to do what his fate and the gods require him to do, but to become a proper Homeric hero, and the Aeneid is the story of how he does so. This statement, if true, is full of implications, possibly decisive ones, for the interpretation of the poem as a whole. It addresses which Homeric hero does Aeneas become, how fully does he inhabit this role, when does he begin to do so, and when does he complete his transformation. The chapter looks at issues that pertain to what Servius describes as the double purpose of the Aeneid. An asymmetrical perspective on the Homeric poems agrees with Aeneas' behavior and with the decisions that he makes.
