Perineal radical prostatectomy

Perineal radical prostatectomy (PRP) for carcinoma of the prostate was a popular operation before the introduction of retropubic prostatectomy in the 1940s. Recently, there has been renewed interest in PRP because patients are seeking less invasive treatment. With the modern modified technique, the PRP produces results comparable to the open retropubic prostatectomy. However, it is less surgically invasive with a short hospital stay. Compared with the laparoscopic technique, it is technically less demanding and has a much shorter learning curve.
