Confucius (551–479bce) was the founder of Confucianism and the most influential thinker in Chinese intellectual history. His given name is Qiu, cognomen Zhongni, and surname Kong. “Confucius” was the Latinization (by the first Jesuit missionaries to China) of Kongzi (literally, “Master Kong”).
