In 1890 the brothers Gustav and Ernst Klimt and their fellow student Franz von Matsch were commissioned to perform a picturesque cycle in the large staircase of the Museum of Art History. In symbolic figures, these so-called twigs and intercolumni depict the great stalemates of art history such as Egypt, the Greek and Roman art of antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The library has six transmission sketches by Gustav Klimt on this topic.
